Welcome back to my final blog post! In this blog, I will compose a five-to-ten minutes video reflection about my experiences in this class like blog post #7; Midterm Reflection. In reflective writing, I need to look back events, think about what I learned from them, and think about how the lessons could be applied to the future events. This is because the purpose is to help me learn from a particular practical experience. Before taking a video, I watched a short video; Reflective Writing again because it helps me to write a good reflection. These four questions will be the main focuses of my final reflection.
In the last class, we wrote what we learned in this English Composition Ⅰ class on a whiteboard.

Welcome back to my blog post #13! In this blog post, I am using an "X-ray" process, so I can see the "bones" of my research project argument. At this point, my research project is still a work-in-progress. Thus, this post serves as a part of my revision process. 1. My thesis statement is: Instagram represents an American zeitgeist now and the future because it has a strong relationship to a mental health for teenager. 2. My first supporting point that argues the how or why pf my zeitgeist is: The first reason why many SNS especially Instagram users have mental health problems is their low self-esteem.
3. My second supporting point that argues the how or why pf my zeitgeist is: FOMO (fear of missing out) is the other cause of young Instagram users’ mental health problems.
4. My third supporting point that argues the how or why pf my zeitgeist is: Bullying is the other cause of teen Instagram users’ mental health problems.
5. My counter-argument and rebuttal is: Of course, I know some people will disagree with my opinion and tell me several advantages of Instagram. For example, Instagram is good for business or building one’s network. However, social networking service particularly Instagram is too early for young children. They should learn about the fear of internet and how to protect their personal information. This is because once they post their selfie or pictures including personal information on the internet, they stay forever as a digital tattoo. At the worst case, it eliminates a possibility of their future. For instance, some teenagers lost their jobs and future because of their thoughtless Instagram posts. 6. My prediction is: Even if technology keeps developing quickly, the number of people who have mental health problems will not decrease.
7. My conclusion revisits the thesis statement and makes (a call to action). 8. "X-ray" summary: I think that I need to find other source for my prediction. This is because I am not a professional of technology, so I should use a professional research or statement. Welcome back to my blog post #12! In this blog, I can write anything about my research project the same as my previous blog post #11. Thus, I decided to use this blog as annotated bibliography. I will keep updating this page until the end of this semester, so the contents could be changed sometimes. "Instagram: active users 2018." In this blog, I can write anything about my research project. Thus, I decided to write about a plan and progress of my research project.
Last week, I was thinking to research about social networking service such as Instagram and the effect on teenagers. However, I realized that my topic was still too broad because there are many possible topics that I can expand from my topic. For example, if I focus on a danger of using Instagram, I will be able to write about the disadvantages such as privacy. Also, if I focus on the relationship between Instagram and teenager's mental health, I will be able to write about mental health problem such as depression. Therefore, I decided to narrow down my topic. First, I wanted to research about Instagram, so I decided to write about something related to Instagram. This is because I did not understand why so many people were attracted by it although they can only post their pictures such as selfies. In addition, I was interested in mental health problems too. This is because even though technology has developed very fast, many people are straggling with mental health problems such as depression, and there is not specific solution yet. From these my interests, I decided "Instagram and Depression" as a topic of my research project. In fact, both of them have a strong relationship. Also, I think this topic represents a American zeitgeist now and in the future. Next, I needed to decide a genre of my research project. Last week, I was thinking to write MLA Research Paper. This is because I had written MLA research paper before. However, my teacher said to us, "If your audience was a teenager, MLA research paper might not work well. This is because it looked like difficult and boring for them." Also, he recommended me Op-Ed (opinion editorial) as my genre. Thus, I decided to write Op-Ed research paper after I compared it with other two genres; Multigenre and Documentary. Finally, now I am ready to start writing the first draft of my research project. Thus, I will start working as soon as possible because the due date of the first draft is next Sunday. I am sure I will be straggle with the project, but it will be the last formal assignment for English CompositionⅠclass. Therefore, I will try to do my best so that I will not regret it later. Welcome back to my blog post #10! In this blog, I will answer nine questions relate to my research project. Before answering them, I looked up a definition of the word, "zeitgeist" because all questions are about it. I attached the website's link on the blue word, zeitgeist. Thus, if you are interested in, please click it. - What is the zeitgeist topic I want to research? I want to research about social networking service such as Instagram and the effect on young people. This is because in 2000s, people were able to just enjoy new technology and post their selfies on social media. On the other hand, in 2010s, people gradually noticed the importance of digital literacy to protect their privacy particularly for young people. - What is the primary source I will use to begin my research? I will use a reliable website introducing a research result about social media and young user to begin my research. Few weeks ago, I found an article about the relationship between SNS and young people's depression rate, so I am thinking to use the article. - Who does the zeitgeist topic impact the most? My zeitgeist topic impacts the most on young SNS users particularly between 13 to 17. - When did this zeitgeist emerge? This zeitgeist emerged 2000s with Six degrees which was a social network service website. - Where does this zeitgeist impact the most? It could be anywhere in the world. This is because many countries have similar situation of social media. However, social media was originally created in the United States, so I will focus on the United States. - Why does this zeitgeist exist? This is because nowadays social media is very convenient, and many people cannot live without it. For example, they can see and post what they want. Also, some people try to get many followers and likes to be famous on the social media. - How does the zeitgeist topic make me feel (impact on your being)? This topic makes me feel sad a little bit because many people including me tend to watch their phones all time, and they think lightly of real communication. - How does the zeitgeist topic make me think (impact on your knowing)? This topic makes me think how we can make good balance between online and real communities. - How does the zeitgeist topic make me want to make change (impact on your doing)? This topic makes me want to make change the way to use social media in order to protect their privacy and built healthy relationship with other people. Welcome back to my blog post #9! In this blog, I will read four texts and answer the question, "How do these texts speak to the spirit of our discourse community?" I provided the links below, so if you are interested in, please check them. Also, I chose a found poem as a genre for my interpretation.
We Are Many Of the many men whom I am, whom we are, I cannot settle on a single one. What must I do to distinguish myself? How can I put myself together? I never know just WHO I AM, nor how many I am, nor WHO WE WILL BE BEING. If I really need my proper self, I must not allow myself to disappear. While I am writing, I am far away; and when I come back, I have already left. I should like to see if the same thing happens to other people as it does to me, to see if as many people are as I am, and if they seem the same way to themselves. What is Literacy? Think of a Discourse as an of 'identity kit' which comes complete with an appropriate costume and instructions on how to act, talk, and often write, so as to take on a particular role that others will recognize. Discourses are inherently "ideological". Any discourses concerns itself with certain objects and puts forward certain concepts, viewpoints, and vales at the expense of others. Discourses are intimately related to the distribution of social power and hierarchical structure in society. It is sometimes helpful to say that individuals do not speak and act, but that historically and socially defined discourses speak to each other through individuals. The individual is simply the meeting point of many. To You, I Belong Historical memory makes us aware that the past is with us in the present, that previous unresolved, complicated, and multilayered events are replaying themselves in various forms in the present. This memory can be imprinted on the body. It can be imprinted on trees, stones, in taste, scent, and sound. While it can be handed down directly from one generation to the next, it can also skip generations. It can be transmitted in dreams, rituals, and visions. Historical memory is not an abstract concept. It lives in our unconscious, in the body. It is often preverbal - knowledge that cannot be adequately described using the master's tongue, the master's language. Our Discourse Community Values
Conceptualize discourse communities as social networks that frame the ethics, expectations, and exigencies of stakeholders who use situated languages to bond with others and to make meaning. Cultivate joy in writing and learning. Connect past, present, and future writing histories and knowledges. Clarify meaning for oneself. Compose in multiple genres, modes, and media to meet the moments of 21st century rhetorical situations. Create reiterative writing processes to generate and revise ideas. Construct a writer’s identity to interact with the authorial choices of others and of self. Welcome back to my blog post #8! In this blog, I will compose a five-to-ten minutes video reflection about my experiences in this class. My video is mostly about how I have been changed in this course. Before taking a video, I watched a short video Reflective Writing because it helps me to write a good reflection. These four questions will be the main focuses of my midterm reflection.
Welcome back to my fifth blog! In this blog, I will respond to five questions which relate to my first draft of the narrative project. Before writing, I watched three video performances from The Wizard of Oz and interpreted the scenes because it will help me to improve my first draft. I provided the links below, so if you are interested in, please check them.
- How does your narrative allow you to travel into your brain (mind) then and now? My narrative allows me to travel into my brain by recalling what I though. At that time, I tried not to remember the event. This is because if I looked back the situation, I always remembered traumas such as the silence and faces of the audiences. Then I felt very uncomfortable. On the other hand, now I grew up and had many experiences. Therefore, I know it was not a big mistake even though the mistake affected me greatly. - How does your narrative allow you to travel into your heart (emotions) then and now? My narrative allows me to travel into my heart by remembering what I felt. At that time, I was overwhelmed and ashamed the small mistake because I thought it was everything in my world. On the other hand, now I know a bigger world, so even if I make a mistake, I do not feel ashamed because I learned a shame does not help to improve myself. However, to be honest, I still get very nervous before speaking in front of many people. - How does your narrative meet the nerve (high-stakes) element of meaningful storytelling? My narrative meets the nerve element of meaningful storytelling because my story is about facing hard challenge and getting over it at the end. Also, this is a Man vs Self conflict story. I used many descriptions that express my nervousness to make readers anxious. - How does your narrative enable you to re-examine the power (agency) you have in authoring your life-story? My narrative enables me to re-examine the power I have in authoring my life-story by reconstructing my memories. Looking back the event helps me to reconfirm how it was important in my life. Also, now I feel like I want to recall every memories and write about them. - What shapes our sense of identity: Life events or the stories we tell ourselves about life events? I think life events shape our sense of identity because while experiencing the life events, we feel strong emotions and change our minds. Telling about the life events help us to shape our identities, but it is based on what we felt and thought during the events. Welcome back to my fourth blog! In this blog, I will write an emotional moment include dialogue and at least one symbol. Before writing, I read “Hills Like White Elephants” written by Ernest Hemingway because it is a good example of dialogue and symbolism.
Last winter, I traveled across the United States alone by using Amtrak trains. One night, I was only one passenger who stayed at a room on the first floor of Amtrak's sleeping car. Bathrooms were on the first floor, so I sometimes met to other passengers, but mostly I was alone. Thus, I felt lonely a little bit. In my room, I could not hear any sound except the sound of the train. Looking out of the window, there was a vast plain and some snow. Also, the sky was getting dark. The train was running along the boundary between the United States and Canada, so it was a little chilly. Around 6 pm, I went to a dining car to eat dinner, and I sit at a table with other passengers who were a middle-age man, an elderly woman and her daughter. At that time, it had only four months since I came to the United States. Thus, I could not speak English will, but I did not want to ruin the atmosphere, so I tried my best and introduced myself briefly. The rest of the time, I concentrated on listening their boring stories and giving responses. After I finished eating dinner, I left the seat instantly. On the way back to my room, I was spoken by one elderly man who was a tall and slender. “Are you Japanese?” the man asked me. “Yes, I am…how did you know?” I answered a question with another question. “While I was eating dinner at a different table, I heard some Japanese words, so I was interested in you,” the man said. I did not know about him yet. Thus, I was suspicious of him, but I decided to keep listening to stories from him. “When I was young, I liked Japan, so I studied about Japan’s culture by myself at the front of Vietnam War,” he said. “Really?” I was very surprised. “Also, I had a Japanese best friend who passed away several years ago. Moreover, my daughter is studying abroad to Osaka, Japan for a few years,” he said. At first, I did not believe him, but I gradually thought his stories were true. In fact, he was able to speak some Japanese words. Finally, we had a lively conversation for more than 30 minutes in the hallway. After I parted from him, I went back to my room. However, I did not feel lonely at all. This is because I was able to know the meaning of the saying “truth is stranger than fiction” from that experience. I did not ask for his contact information, but I was satisfied with the miraculous encounter. Before I went to bed, I looked out of the window and noticed a bright city was getting closer. |
